A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
