In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
