Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
